Milton Keynes City Council Sustainability Strategy 2026–2050

Milton Keynes City Council Sustainability Strategy 2026–2050

4 March 2026

On Monday, our Associate, Emma, attended the official launch of the Milton Keynes Sustainability Strategy at Unity Place, an important milestone in the city’s journey towards a greener, fairer future.
Back in 2019, Milton Keynes City Council declared a climate emergency. Since then, the Council has been shaping a long-term strategy that sets out a clear pathway from 2026 to 2050, with an ambitious target of achieving net zero by 2030.
What stood out most at the launch was not just the environmental ambition, but the recognition that climate action must go hand in hand with social responsibility.

A Strategy Built with the Community
The Sustainability Strategy has been shaped through public consultation, including an open day held at the city library last summer. Feedback from residents, businesses and community groups has been incorporated into the final document, reinforcing the principle that meaningful climate action must be co-designed.
A key theme woven throughout the strategy is protecting the most vulnerable in the city. The transition to a low-carbon economy must not leave anyone behind. Instead, it should reduce inequality, lower energy bills, and improve quality of life across Milton Keynes.

Core Ambitions for Milton Keynes
The Council’s aims are wide-ranging and forward-thinking. They include:
• Supporting businesses to transition into a low-carbon economy
• Maximising clean, local energy generation
• Improving energy security and reducing costs
• Building on Milton Keynes’ green heritage
• Delivering a Local Nature Recovery Strategy
• Creating opportunities for residents, businesses and communities to co-design solutions
The introduction of EarthScale was also highlighted, a platform supporting climate-focused innovation, with particular encouragement for local tech representation.

Transport: A Major Area for Change
Transport is a significant focus within the strategy.
Currently:
• 80% of Milton Keynes residents own a car
• 40% own more than one vehicle
To reduce transport-related emissions, the strategy outlines:
• Investment in franchised electric buses
• Development of a rapid transit network
• Continued support for MK Connect serving rural areas
• Reinvestment in Milton Keynes’ iconic redways, improving safety and signage
• Ongoing promotion of micromobility, including e-scooters
• Preparation for future technologies such as autonomous vehicles and drone deliveries
The ambition is not just about reducing carbon, it’s about creating a safer, more connected and accessible city.

Supporting Local Businesses
Two major initiatives were announced to help drive sustainable growth:
Green Business Fund
The Green Business Fund offers grants of up to £25,000 to help businesses reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency, and develop sustainability-related skills.
MK Green Business Network
The Milton Keynes Green Businesses initiative has also launched, providing networking opportunities and regular events to promote and support environmentally responsible businesses across the city.
This collaborative approach signals that achieving net zero will require collective action across sectors, disciplines and communities.

The Role of Architects in Delivering Net Zero
As architects, we recognise the responsibility our profession has to shape the built environment.
Delivering on Milton Keynes’ sustainability ambitions means:
• Designing energy-efficient, low-carbon buildings
• Prioritising retrofit and reuse wherever possible
• Selecting materials with reduced embodied carbon
• Creating places that promote sustainable transport and biodiversity
• Designing spaces that remain adaptable and resilient for generations
A strong strategy is an essential first step. The real impact will come from translating policy into practical, measurable action through design decisions made today that influence how places function long into the future.

It was an inspiring event to attend and encouraging to see such a clear direction being set for Milton Keynes.
At Benchmark Architects, we are committed to playing our part by designing responsibly, supporting our clients in making sustainable choices, and contributing positively to the city’s journey towards a low-carbon future.
If you would like to discuss how sustainability can be embedded into your next project, we would be delighted to start that conversation.
