AJ Architecture Awards Finalists 2024!
We are thrilled to announce that our project, Oak Hill Lawn Crematorium in Hatfield, was a finalist at the AJ Awards 2024! We are very pleased to be recognized for this remarkable project. A huge congratulations to all the finalists and winners; it was a very enjoyable evening.
Oak Hill Lawn Crematorium is a new bereavement centre and crematorium for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council. The scheme is located at Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery, South Way, Hatfield.
The project includes a new crematorium with a capacity for 150 people in a double-storey chapel, office and administration facilities and extensive landscaping works to enhance the existing cemetery including a flower court and dedicated memorial spaces. The building has been designed to minimise visual impact on the surrounding greenbelt and uses the existing topography to ensure that the highest part of the building sits below the existing tree line.
We were first commissioned to work with Hatfield Council in 2017 to provide technical architectural design for the initial planning approved proposals by Gollings Architects. The project did not move forward at that time and after a period of consideration, Benchmark Architects was successful at invited tender to win the opportunity to revise the design and resubmit the planning application, which was approved in 2020. We led the stage 4 technical design, then were novated to the main contractor for the construction stage, ensuring quality and refinement throughout.
The AJ Architecture Awards celebrate and reward design excellence in UK architecture. The awards will highlight the very best projects in 16+ categories from housing, health and wellbeing to workplace and cultural projects.
