Planning Application Submitted at Bromham Mill

Plans have been submitted in the historic village of Bromham for the renovation and development of Bromham Mill.

Bromham Mill is a grade II listed building and has been owned and maintained by Bedford Borough Council since 1973 up until 2022 when ownership was transferred to Bromham Parish Council. The Mill is a multi-phase building of stone, brick and half-timbered, standing close to the medieval Bromham bridge with its long causeway. The stone portion of the building bears the date 1858, which likely reflects the date of it being rebuilt. There are earlier dates elsewhere, but these may relate to flooding events rather than the mill’s construction.

The development seeks planning permission for the reuse, renovation and development of the Bromham Mill and looks to achieve the following:
The Mill – Café removed, mill shop changed to nature club space, mill reverts to gallery and museum // Mill House – House changes to well-being centre // Front Barn – change of use from storage to become the new location of The Mill Coffee Shop // The Hovel – external food outlet associated with the mill cafe // The Stables – change of use to 4 retail units + 1 plant unit // The Workshop – change of use to two commercial units E – class flexible (hair and beauty) // Existing toilet block – removed and replaced with new block // Back Barn – currently used by the Nature Club is to be demolished // New welfare wc’s & showers / site maintenance storage block // New commercial business units // 74 parking spaces 10 of which are E.V spaces // Cycle parking for up to 46 bicycles.

The materials used will depict contemporary takes on the vernacular material palette of the Bromham Mill which is a combination of black stained timber cladding and stone. The design will look to illustrate how traditional material can be elevated and detailed to create a crisp modern aesthetic. The scheme will not only reflect on this historic heritage asset in Bromham, but enhance and modernise it.

The proposal will make a significant and positive contribution to the village of Bromham and the wider surrounding area, we look forward to the determination of the application.
