Benchmark Architects’ First International Crematorium in Cyprus
We are thrilled to share that we are working on our first international crematorium.
Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium will be the first crematorium to be constructed in Cyprus since the laws changed, allowing cremation, in 2019. Located on Cyprus’s western coast near Paphos, the site, situated by a valley with views of an inland lake, golf course, and coastline, currently holds a permit for a crematorium, yet the client aims to optimize the building’s orientation, layout, and visitor experience.
The two-level design takes advantage of the site’s natural slope, with access granted by a single-track road on the eastern edge. Visitors are welcomed into the building via a shaded canopy and enter the congregation spaces that provide direct access to both chapels and terrace areas. Facilities include a reception, administration offices, and a family room for ashes collection, with both levels connected by stairs and a lift.
The building’s design combines traditional island elements with a modern touch. Chalk white render reflects Cyprus’s geology, while large stone walls anchor it in the rugged landscape. Timber cladding, inspired by the surrounding trees, compliments these materials, lending warmth and distinction to internal spaces and circulation areas. This revised layout aims to enhance the facility's operational flow and user experience.
This marks the first international project to come out of Benchmark Architects' design studio. We are currently working through the planning permit processes with local consultant partner Vafeades & Vafeades and hope to be on-site in the new year.
