Huntingdon Crematorium Shortlisted for the AJ Architecture Awards 2022

We are absolutely delighted to announce that our crematorium in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire has been shortlisted in the Civic Category for the AJ Architecture Awards 2022.

Huntingdon Town Council commissioned us to design a new build crematorium and burial ground for the district. Working closely with the council, CDS Group and Kier, we developed this scheme on land adjacent to Jubilee Park, located Northeast of central Huntingdon and we are thrilled with the finished build.

The stunning circular, white brick crematorium, with gold accents, sits elegantly within the newly planted landscape. The design focuses around a central drum form which contains the ceremonial hall for 125 people, featuring double height spaces and mezzanine seating, along with floor to ceiling glazing and high levels of natural light. It also contains waiting rooms, a flower court and crematory which contains two modern and sustainable DFW electric cremators. Electric cremators can provide improved energy efficiency with single cremation saving approximately 113.4kg of CO2 emissions compared to a gas cremation.

The processional route through the building, for the funeral party and guests alike, is marked with gold PPC aluminium cladding on columns and principal doorways. This is a strong visual aid and assists movement through the building. The site also includes 2,700 plots plus natural burial and has expansion provision.

The crematorium has a second building separated by planting, car parking and the funeral party route, which contains a multi-purpose function room and café with associated catering facility, administration offices and a family room for the collection of ashes.
