Rushcliffe Oaks Crematorium

Located on the outskirts of Nottingham, we have been working closely with Rushcliffe District Council, CDS Group and Ridge + Partners on a new build crematorium.

Having inherited a previous planning consent, we sought to develop a simplified building form, focusing on a large cantilevered green roof. Flanking walls screen private areas of the building. Key building functions are arranged to follow the processional route; from a light filled waiting area through to the ceremonial hall, leading out to a simple flower court. The ceremonial hall is generous, designed to reflect external materials and has views out to a well-planned reflection garden. The introduction of a roof lantern to this room adds height, light and focus.

The proposed designs have been carefully considered to sit well within the existing area, with materials being kept muted and simple with timber added in areas to promote warmth and a welcoming atmosphere. Both internally and externally the muted materials are accented with bronze to reflect the quality of this public building.

Surrounding landscapes have been designed to simplify and where appropriate accent flows around the site. The inclusion of an oak tree lined boulevard leading from the reflection garden links the building with the memorial gardens.
